Sospesi nel tempo nasce nel 1992 da un'idea di Peter
Jackson e sua moglie Fran Walsh mentre stavano ultimando la scrittura di Creature del cielo. I due, convinti del
successo che potrebbe guadagnare la storia, concepiscono due pagine di sceneggiatura e la inviano a Robert Zemeckis, che

Una ragazza, Patricia Bradley, scappa da un fantasma che la segue attraverso le
pareti. Si salva quando sua madre compare e spara col fucile al fantasma.

Frank Bannister, dopo la perdita
della moglie, ha sospeso il lavoro come architetto, lasciando la casa da sogno che stava realizzando incompleta.
Oltretutto, a seguito della morte della moglie, Frank ha guadagnato il potere di vedere i fantasmi e sfrutta questa
abilità per trarne profitto (usa tre fantasmi chiamati Cyrus, Stewart ed il giudice, per infestare le case della
zona, e quando le famiglie non ne possono più, si presenta come disinfestatore di fantasmi e si fa pagare per
eliminarli). Frank conosce così, durante una delle sue truffe, Lucy Lynskey, moglie di Ray Lynskey, la cui casa è
"infestata" dai tre fantasmi.



Tutto cambia quando
sulla città cala un'entità maligna che uccide delle persone segnate da un numero sulla fronte che solo chi ha
reali poteri mentali può vedere. Una delle vittime è proprio il marito di Lucy, la quale, credendo ai poteri
paranormail di Frank, lo contatta e diventa sua amica. Frank decide di indagare sulle morti, spinto dal fatto che anche
sua moglie, molto tempo prima, era stata trovata morta in un incidente stradale con un numero intagliato sulla fronte.
Dal momento che Frank riesce a vedere questi numeri può prevedere gli omicidi, ma questo lo rende un sospettato dalla
polizia poiché sempre presente nelle scene dei delitti. Un eccentrico agente dell'FBI di nome Milton Dammers prova ad
arrestarlo.......
